Out of the Norm is a proposed identity for an exhibition
at the State Library Victoria to celebrate designer
Alexander Stitt’s life collection of works, and in particular
his most infamous piece, ‘Norm the Couch Potato.’ Stitt was known as an icon, and one of Australia’s foremost cartoonist, illustrator, artist and celebrity. This exhibition focuses on the ‘fun in learning’ motif that ran through many of Stitt’s Life work, and hopes to
encourage an active lifestyle and to revitalise spirits. The
exhibition title is a further emphasis of Stitt’s character
and his impact on many generations, and was designed with movement in mind.
Elements from Stitt’s previous work was inspiration for the cartoon characterfeatured throughout the exhibition. It provides visitors visual cues to direct them through the exhibition whilst being fun and playful.
The elements were further combined to create a seperate identifying cartoon character for the exhibition, rather than directly using his existing illustrations that will be featured.
The concept idea for the invitation card was inspired by
a portrait of Alexander Stitt. The hole cut out in the invitation is a exploration of the
active lifestyle that Stitt portrayed, and hoped to inspire
visitors to have fun at the exhibition by actively using the
hole in the invitation as a peephole to view his art.
This
idea also emulates how Stitt approached and saw the world, and how he made serious topics lighthearted.
